The ovaries produce progesterone after the ovulation, in the second half of the cycle. Under the influence of progesterone, the uterine lining produces decidual cells that are needed for nidation (implantation) of the embryo.

To make sure that there is enough progesterone in the uterus, especially after egg cells removal during IVF and ICSI treatment progesterone gel is inserted into the vagina or progesterone injections are prescribed. These medications are used until the second week of pregnancy and after that if their effect is positive.

The second reason to prescribe progesterone is weakness of the yellow body or insemination therapy underway.
