Egg cell donation

If menopause starts too early (so-called climacterium praecox) or if for example because of inflammations, resulting from endometriosis of ovaries or tumour, the ovarian function comes to an end too early, egg cell donation is often the only alternative. Similar as during insemination of foreign sperms, ethic and legal considerations determine the approach. Though foreign insemination (heterologic insemination) is allowed in Germany, the egg cell insemination is not allowed (the Embryo Protection Act).

During an egg cell donation procedure, egg cells of another woman are retrieved from the follicles (follicular puncture) and are fertilized mostly through microinsemination. Then they are transferred to the recipient of embryos in a hormonally regulated cycle.

With the help of this technique, significantly older patients are fertilized abroad.
